West & Central Darfur States<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Restoration and Maintenance of Food and Livelihoods Security for Vulnerable Households<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

The intervention was designed to complement the work done by <\/span>IRDS under the Livelihood Support and Community Economic Revitalization Program for Returnees and Vulnerable, conflict affected Local Residents in two localities in West and Central Darfur States. This program is implemented in partnership with Darfur Development and Reconstruction Agency (DRA) and support from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). This LoA has become an integral part of this program and complemented its activities. The program objective was to improve and enhance food security and livelihoods of 130 vulnerable farming households and to 10,000 animal owning households in selected villages of Sulu and Krenick localities <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The program was implemented in collaboration with the local communities in three clusters of villages, cluster one and two in Kiranik locality in West Darfur State (WDS) and cluster three in Azum locality in Central Darfur State (CDS). <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The communities in the target areas were organized under the leadership of a Supreme Community Affairs Committees (SCAC) which were formed by DRA during a previous intervention to coordinate relief and development interventions. The LoA objectives and activities were explained to the SCAC members; IRDS outlined the parameter of the beneficiaries’ selection criteria and agreed on the responsibilities of the individual village development committees (VDC) in ensuring the impartial, transparent and fair selection process, and requested them to propose potential participants for the various program activities. DRA and IRDS project staff received lists of potential participants and vetted all proposed participants and made the final beneficiary selection, the LoA provided direct inputs to the beneficiaries of the Livelihood Support and Community Economic Revitalization Program.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

IRDS also engaged the ministry of agriculture and animal resources in both States in the training of the beneficiaries and the implementation of pastureland management and animal vaccination campaigns.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The FAO WDS provided seeds systems and tools in addition to vaccines and technical support to IRDS staff and assisted them in determining the appropriate types and quantities of seeds required.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The LoA also supported the community farms through the establishment of irrigation systems that are vital to the success of winter season agriculture.<\/span><\/p>\n
